About The Big Event

What is The Big Event?

The Big Event is a community service organization within the ASUN Student Government at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Big Event has served the Lincoln community since 2006.

Every year, an appointed executive group of students plan and host this event for the UNL student body. Students volunteer in the local Lincoln community by helping community organizations and private residences do acts of service, like painting walls, cleaning garages, raking leaves, etc. More than 3,000 students, faculty, and staff volunteer annually to give thanks to the community with The Big Event. The organization is entirely student-run and funded by donations from the community.

History

In 1982, the Vice President of the Student Government Association at Texas A&M University started The BIG Event as a way for students to say “thank you” to the surrounding community. It was created to be a one-day service project where residents of Bryan and College Station would be shown appreciation for their continued support of Texas A&M University students during their college careers.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln proudly adopted this program and has been serving the Lincoln community in the same way since 2006.
