Why did you join TBE Exec?
I joined The Big Event Exec team because I wanted to be a part of something with a lot of untapped potential. Being on the Operations Staff my Sophomore year made me realize how impactful this organization is, but also how much even more impactful it could be if there was a team of passionate individuals behind it. I knew I had the passion, and I am grateful that someone believed in me enough to put me on the exec team my Junior year, because my passion for this organization has only grown. As a Co-Chair this year, I am determined to do my part to make this year's event the best its ever been, and to also set the tone for years to come. I am constantly reminding myself that this is not about me, or anyone on the exec team for that matter, it is about the spirit of giving and being able to selflessly serve our community.
Why are you passionate about TBE?
My freshmen year, I volunteered for The Big Event with my sorority. My friends and I were assigned to pick up trash in a neighborhood. Doesn't sound very glamorous, but it was actually a lot of fun. I was surprised by how much joy it brought me to simply pick up trash on these streets that I could literally see from my dorm room windows everyday. The following year, I joined the Operations Staff and went to a couple resident's homes before the event to fill out paper work. As I talked to these people, one elderly lady specifically, I saw just how much this organization mattered. This one lady's yard had been filled with debris after a bad thunder storm a couple months prior, but she had a bad back and she lived alone so she couldn't clean it herself. She was so thankful to have a group of student volunteers from The BIG Event come to her house that day and help her... So often, we get too caught up in our own lives and our own worlds that we forget there are other people out there that have it a lot worse than us. And sometimes, those people are our neighbors - they live right by us and even though we are able to help, we aren't willing to help because we are too busy or we simply just don't care. The BIG Event challenges that mindset. It provides students with an opportunity to look outside themselves for one day and start looking at others and asking, "How can I help you?" They might even find that making a positive difference in someone else's life, actually makes a positive difference in their own. And, just maybe, that 'one day' will turn into a lifestyle.
